Filmed in 1991 at New York City venue The Ritz, this documentary features Agnostic Front, Sick of It All, and Gorilla Biscuits live on stage. Also included are interview segments with members of those three bands plus others such as Jimmy Gestapo from Murphy's Law and Harley Flanagan from the Cro-Mags.

Butthole Surfers - 1991 - Lollapalooza

The summer of 1991 I was a broke ass college student about to start my Senior year that fall. Never been a particularly big fan of arena or big outdoor shed shows, but there were two tours making the outdoor venue circuit that season that caught my attention immediately - the Clash of the Titans tour with Slayer, Anthrax & Megadeth and the first installment of the Lollapalooza multi-band festival - headlined by Jane's Addiction.

I could scrape together enough cash for one, but not both so I had to make a tough decision. I'd already seen Anthrax once and Slayer multiple times in smaller indoor venues and after their first three records, my feelings on Megadeth are rather lukewarm. On the other hand, I'd missed several chances to see Jane's Addiction earlier and was amped up to see them. The deciding factor was the placement of one of my all time favorite bands, the Butthole Surfers, in the Lollapalooza line-up and that's my actual ticket up top.

The Jesus Lizard - 29 April 1991 - DC Space

The Jesus Lizard began its existence in Texas - 1988 when former Scratch Acid vocalist David Yow teamed up with guitarist Duane Denison. Shortly thereafter, Yow's fellow band member from Scratch Acid, bassist David Sims joined the fold and everyone moved to Chicago in 1989. Once in Chicago, Jesus Lizard recorded their debut ep Pure with a drum machine filling out the rhythm section. While this initial release is beautifully raucous and strident, the band's sound became fully developed with the addition of drummer Mac McNeilly. 1990 saw the release of Head, both their first full length record as well as the first recordings as a four piece. Their 1991 record Goat is my favorite and the clips below come from a tour supporting it's release.

Studio recordings from The Jesus Lizard have always been a well tuned display of power dynamics at work, but it is in the live setting that their art damaged and primal fury get a chance to fully flex. Always a high energy performing band, early shows sometimes also allowed Yow a chance to display a wardrobe malfunction he called "tight n' shiny" for the audience.

Slint – 3 selections from the record Spiderland (1991)

Slint formed primarily out of the remains of the band Squirrel Bait in Louisville, Kentucky during 1986 and lasted until 1991. During their initial existence they produced two full length records; Tweez in 1987 and Spiderland in 1991.

Their sound is post punk, post hardcore, perhaps post rock. Not an enormous seller at the time of it's release, Spiderland would prove to be influential for years to come. Themes of alienation and loss occupy many of the lyrics. Much use is made of a quiet-loud dynamic with vocals going from whispers to shouts and the musical accompaniment following suit with sparse, angular and irregular audio echoing.
