Night Patrol (1984)

1984s Night Patrol is an odd "comedy" movie that was written by Murray Langston, who curiously enough is better known to most folks as his show business alter-ego The Unknown Comic. He plays Melvin, a schlub policeman who just got demoted to working the night shift and also has a burning desire to be a stand up comedian. A colorful crew of curious Hollywood notables fill out the cast and include: Linda Blair, Pat Paulsen, Jaye P. Morgan, Billy Barty, Sydney Lassick, Pat Morita, and Andrew Dice Clay in an early film role; credited here as Andy Clay.

While Murray Langston was the original screenwriter, several others are credited with assisting on the script and one of them is producer Bill Osco who is also known for being a pioneer in "adult" film making, producing titles such as: Mona: The Virgin Nymph (1970), Flesh Gordon (1974), or Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy (1976).

Tank (1984)

1984s Tank was a rare foray into feature films for Marvin J. Chomsky, a prolific television director whose work spans popular series such as Gunsmoke, Cannon, Hawaii Five-0, and Mission: Impossible; as well as notable tv mini-series such as Roots and Victory at Entebbe.

James Garner stars as Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Zack Carey, a hard charging but reasonable military man who has just arrived for his newest post at an army base in the deep south of the U.S., bringing with him both his family (Shirley Jones and C. Thomas Howell) and his personal Sherman tank. It's not long before his no-nonsense manner smacks face first against a corrupt deputy (James Cromwell) and thus he and his family become entangled in a quickly escalating conflict with the nasty Sheriff Cyrus Buelton, played perfectly by G.D. Spradlin.

Another State of Mind (1984)

Re-blogging this from three years ago, now updated with this one-part version...

Another State of Mind (1984)
is one of my favorite documentaries and I have Night Flight to thank for my first viewing. The film's directors Adam Small and Peter Stuart followed LA punk bands Youth Brigade and Social Distortion as they ventured out on a Summer of 1982 tour with stops in Canada and across the United States using a converted school bus as transportation. The film unfolds as the shows progress, some unavoidable problems occur, and cause increasing tensions to mount among the bands and crew.

The film is well constructed; including numerous interviews with fans along the way, as well as articulate punk rock stalwarts including Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks and Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat.

I did get to see Social Distortion once back in 1988 when they played the Exit in Chicago in support of their Prison Bound record, although this film this was lensed a little before I started really getting into the music and going to shows, Another State of Mind (1984) presents an engrossing "fly on the wall" view of an early, do-it-yourself punk rock tour.

Hirax demo tape (1984)

Here's some very early stuff from the mighty Hirax. Their sound on this release is full on heavy metal with little of the thrash that would characterize later records. Katon DePena's distinct vocals take center stage sonically, as do the fast and heavy guitar solos.

Suburbia (1984)

Released by Roger Corman's New World Pictures, Penelope Spheeris wrote and directed Suburbia (1984) after making The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) and prior to filming The Boys Next Door (1985). Using a cast of almost all LA punks and non-trained actors while shooting in an area of tract housing set aside to be demolished to make way for a highway into LAX, Spheeris's film is sometimes referred to as punxploitation in reviews and I dig that handle. It's downbeat, but very watchable. Thanks to NOTANANUS4k for posting the movie on Youtube.

The Exorcist cast reunion on GMA - 1984

When it comes to Halloween horror shows, director William Friedkin's 1973 film The Exorcist still stands out amongst most fright flicks. Caught the reedited version a few years ago and viewing the film in a theater was a hell of a memorable experience. Below is a Halloween treat featuring a 1984 segment with Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason Miller and William Peter Blatty reuniting for an appearance on Good Morning America.
