USA/Mexico Laredo (2017)

Released at the end of June, USA/Mexico's debut Laredo is without question my favorite album of 2017. Noisy, fuzzy, rumblings that will hypnotize and cauterize your mind + ears.

This comes from their Bandcamp bio: "The long-awaited/rumored/feared debut recordings from Austin, TX trio USA/MEXICO are finally upon us. Guitarist Craig Clouse (Shit & Shine, Todd), drummer King Coffey (Butthole Surfers, Rubble, Hugh Beaumont Experience) and bassist Nate Cross (Marriage, When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth, Expensive Shit) have somehow created a musical landscape that exceeds present day reality for absurdity and nightmarishness. There's faint (oh ok, try "loud") echoes of their past works but their combined forces have resulted in an album as bludgeoning and all-encompassing as any that's occupied shelf space in my home or yours."

I was lucky enough to witness the Locust Abortion Technician tour when the Butthole Surfers played Chicago about a month before the show featured below. 

Over the years I have attended a lot of live shows but that one remains my all time favorite. The combination of incredible music plus the over the top visuals; such as the fog machine pushed into the red line, the heavily odd movies projected either behind the band or onto banks of fog, and the painted naked dancer with glued on facial hair, created an alchemy the likes of which was a true mind-scrambler.

200 Motels (1971)

In 1970 Frank Zappa assembled a new lineup of the Mothers of Invention which featured three members of The Turtles along with some jazz and British musicians. The first release by this new combo was Frank Zappa's solo album Chunga's Revenge. This record plus a May 1970 concert where Zubin Mehta conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic along with a rock band, served as a preview of Zappa's intended film. He presented multiple audio tapes, a ten page treatment, and media clippings to United Artists and this pitch resulted in the studio giving Zappa $650,000 to create the film.

Initial filming took place at Pinewood Studios in the UK. Along with the new Mothers of Invention, musical celebrities Ringo Starr and Keith Moon were also part of the proceedings. Interesting to note that 200 Motels was lensed entirely on videotape and then blown up to 35mm film using a Technicolor film printer used by the BBC.

Fantastic Planet aka La Planète sauvage (1973)

I first got turned on to Fantastic Planet when it aired as part of Night Flight's programming during the 1980s. The film was directed by René Laloux with production design by Roland Topor, written by both and animated at Jiří Trnka Studio. The production itself was handled by French and Czechoslovakian companies and after winning the special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, distribution rights in the United States was picked up by Roger Corman's New World Pictures.

The film's source material was the 1957 French science fiction novel Oms en série (lit. Oms Linked Together) written by Stefan Wul. The film's plot concerns a human like race, known as "Oms" who are existing on the Draags' planet. The Draags are somewhat humanoid is appearance but are much larger and live longer than the diminutive Oms. Some of the Oms are brought into the Draag's homes as domesticated pets but periodically the Oms are hunted and exterminated. A group of Draag children accidentally kill an Om female and take her orphaned offspring home to raise the child. The story continues on filled with curious alien creatures and fauna found throughout the film.

Do Not Panic - Hawkwind Documentary

The psychedelic, space rock sounds of Hawkwind are examined in this documentary. Started in London 1969, the band has undergone several line up changes through the years including Lemmy Kilmister as bass player/vocals from 1972 to 1975. After he was kicked out, he then formed the iconic heavy metal act Motörhead. 

Hawkwind's live show was truly a "trip" where the wild music compounded with lights, strobes, and for a period during the 1970s, an often nude statuesque dancer Stacia. Also notable is the musical dna link that Hawkwind provides between the hippie and early punk worlds.

Can - Documentary on the German Band

This is a documentary on the German band Can, compiled by Rudi Dolezl & Hannes Rossacher. Formed in Cologne, West Germany in 1968 with a sound that mutated from track to track, they created incredible music that influenced musicians such as John Lydon + Public Image, Pavement, and the Butthole Surfers.

Grateful Dead - 1969 - Playboy After Dark

Here's a little video time capsule from 1969 as the Grateful Dead make an appearance on Playboy After Dark and perform "Mountains of the Moon" and "St. Stephen" for Hugh Hefner and pals. The long standing rumor is that Hef had a security guard keep an eye on his drink so as not to be slipped any acid.
