Venom, Slayer, + Exodus - 1985 - Sudio 54, NYC

The Ultimate Revenge: Combat Tour Live
Venom
Slayer
Exodus
Recorded  on April 3, 1985 at Studio 54 in New York.

Wild look back at a truly classic line up of heavy hitting, extreme, and underground metal acts. The footage of Slayer and Exodus comes directly from the filming done at the April 1985 Studio 54 show, but the Venom performance clips come from earlier releases. Not sure why this the case but I vaguely remember hearing Mantas was sick and Venom used replacement guitarists for this gig, so perhaps that's the reason. Backstage interviews provide some comic relief as well as insight into band dynamics and attitudes.

Hot Resort (1985)

A hot mess, 1985s Hot Resort is a cliche filled, snobs-versus-slobs sex comedy that has no business being as entertaining as it is. Produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus during their free wheeling spree of film creation during the 1980s, Hot Resort was directed and co-scripted by John Robins. Mr. Robins has an extensive career in both film and television, but I'm most impressed by his work directing The Benny Hill Show in the 1970s as well as his scripting of the grim 1980 nautical horror film Death Ship.

The story follows four pals from New York City who have hired on for the summer at a tropical beach resort. Of course they're horny, anxious to meet girls, and they also make pals with some of the other workers, initially in response to their new boss and his drill instructor like demeanor. Amongst this cast there are several familiar faces: Bronson Pinchot, Dan Schneider (Better Off Dead..., Head of the Class), and Samm-Art Williams (Blood Simple, A Rage in Harlem). Also on hand is a visibly tired looking Frank Gorshin playing a game show winner vacationing at the resort.

Also of note is the film's musical score, a great deal of which sounds similar to the generic background music from low budget porn being made during this time period.

Krysar - Pied Piper of Hamelin (1985) - Repost

 Reposting with updated link.

This interpretation of an age old fairy tale was directed by Jiří Barta. Krysař (The Pied Piper of Hamelin) is an engrossing stop motion-animated Czech film. It's highly stylized wood carved visualizations take inspiration from the dark world of German Expressionism and the lack of understandable dialogue facilitates
the dreamy atmosphere.

Submit to Me (1985)

With a soundtrack highlighted by the abrasively beautiful Butthole Surfers track "Cherub," Richard Kern's 1985 short Submit to Me provides both brain and eye fulls of darkly sexual and weird entertainment. Featuring Lydia Lunch, Lung Leg, J.G. Thirlwell, and others and written, produced, and directed by Kern. A "friend" told me this short always reminds him of Midwest winters in the mid 80s, gobbling a handful of speedy blotter acid, and kicking back for some mind expanding viewing.

Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985)

With all the political rancor so prevalent currently, I thought it was time to harken back to that simple question once asked by Robert Plant "Does anyone remember laughter?"

Back in 1985 Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, Bobcat Goldthwait, and the rest of the cast and crew of Police Academy 2 certainly did and below is the cinematic proof.

Minutemen - 1 June 1985 - backyard party in Lomita, CA

This footage from a Summer 1985 backyard party where the Minutemen performed for the assembled crowd is a happening display of their working man's punk rock. The vibe is low key and helps produce a straight forwardly rocking set of excellent Minutemen songs.

The documentary We Jam Econo offers a great look at the history and individuals who made up the San Pedro, California combo known as the Minutemen. Also worthy of note for Minutemen knowledge is the chapter devoted to them in Michael Azerrads' Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 and Michael T. Fournier's 33 1/3 - Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime - a wonderfully thorough examination of their classic double album released on SST Records in 1984.

This is a stripped down, re-worked and re-edited version of a blog I first posted on MySpace in August of 2008, now highlighting the backyard show.
