Society (1989)

Society is Brian Yuzna's 1989 directorial debut with the screenplay written by Rick Fry and Woody Keith.

Even though the wild film was completed and shown theatrically throughout Europe in 1989, it was not released in the US until 1992. It's far from a typical horror film with themes that jab heavily at the inequalities of the class system. Body churning special effects were handled by Screaming Mad George.

Red and Rosy (1989)

Frank Grow's 1989 short Red and Rosy is a recommended trip into a demented world involving drag racing, animation, found footage, monsters, and thick surrealism; all served and displayed in a dreamy/nightmarish black and white.

Steel Pole Bath Tub liked the film so much that they used stills from Red and Rosy as cover artwork for their Lurch record. I cannot confirm 100% but I believe the robotic monster was created by Mark Pauline and his skilled craftsmen of the apocalypse at Survival Reseach Labs.

Never got a chance to see the Spacemen 3 live as the scheduled 1989 U.S. tour commemorated in the poster above was scuttled at the last minute due to difficulties in obtaining visas/passports for all the band members. Thanks to djrenetwee posting these 1989 clips on Youtube for a glimpse of what these psychedelic sonic wisecrackers would have brought to U.S. clubs.

To my ears, Morbid Angel's 1989 release Altars of Madness still sounds just as vital and entrail crunchingly powerful now as it did on first listen. Epitomized by lead guitar player Trey Azagthoth's other dimensional fret work, the technical ability displayed by all involved is surgical steel sharp and unrelenting - as is the resulting explosive audio output.


The footage in the following clips present Morbid Angel in a late 1989 UK gig supporting and highlighting selections exclusively from Altars of Madness. Saw the band several months later on their US tour to support Altars... when they played The Channel in Boston. Just as in the clips below, they put on an incredible performance that remains one of my favorite Channel shows. Dig the extreme metal...

Napalm Death interview & live footage – 1988-89

This footage of Napalm Death comes from 1988-89. Combining elements of hardcore, extreme metal, punk and industrial; their sonic output runs the gamut from heavy, slow and super chunky to a whirlwind blur of grinding speed. Lyrics often take an angry stand on socio/political issues or look closer to the world of personal politics and human interaction. Their sound has retained the power and speed as the years have gone by and membership has changed here and there. The band continues to perform today and will be playing in Massachusetts shortly.
