House (1986)

After directing Friday the 13th Part II and Part III  but just before Soul Man, Steve Miner directed the curious film House.

William Katt (forever known as the Greatest American Hero to some folks) stars as a troubled horror writer who moves into his Aunt's home after her death. Things rapidly go downhill as chronic nightmares give way to hallucinations culminating in attacks from other-worldly creatures.

As he did on the Friday the 13th films, Harry Manfredini provides the musical score.

House did good business at the box office, ensuring sequels. It's opening weekend it made $5,923,972 and came in a very close second to Pretty in Pink.

The Children (1980) - Repost

I'm dating myself here, but once upon a time before cable television there were pay tv channels that broadcast movies, specials and "adult" fare over uhf signals. In the metro Chicago area, one such service was named ONTV. You had to have a decoder box to sort out the signal, but that never stopped my pals and I from attempting to catch a glimpse of the nudity and forbidden films on display with out the decoder. I was lucky enough to have a buddy whose parents subscribed to ONTV and were cool with him and his pals watching the R-rated flicks, usually with them watching as well. Several of the movies I first caught in this pre-cable set up have always brought back memories of that channel and time with 1980's low budget horror flick The Children being one such film.

The plot concerns a bus load of little ones who pass through a cloud of toxic gas released from the neighborhood nuclear plant. This turns them into black-finger nailed killers driven to decimate the adult population with killer hugs. You might recognize actor Martin Shakar from his earlier role as the conflicted priest/older brother of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

Ginger (1971)

Starring the statuesque, platinum blonde actress Cheri Caffaro; 1971s Ginger is an all out, exploitation classic that truly delivers the cinematic sex and violence. Ginger is a rich gal who gets recruited as bait by the local police to expose a gang whose specialties are kidnapping and further sleazy actions. Aside from the obvious and copious prurient interests displayed within, this film is also of note as the screen debut of off beat character actor Tracey Walter. This was the first in a series starring Ms. Caffaro as tough gal Ginger, which also includes The Abductors (1972) and Girls Are for Loving (1973)

Dark Star (1974)

I was reminded of John Carpenter's 1974 film Dark Star after recently seeing Jodorowsky's Dune, which highlighted how Alejandro Jodorowsky became aware of (and made him an integral part of his Dune production team) Dan O'Bannon after a chance viewing of Dark Star while on a visit to Los Angeles.

 For having a low budget, Dark Star makes excellent use of an inventive, well written script; and Dan O'Bannon's very creative, shoestring production design.

Action Family (1986) with Chris Elliott

Presented below is Chris Elliott's made for Cinemax 1986 special, Action Family. His annoying, un-self aware character is channeled into private detective Chris in this mash up of Kojack meets The Partridge Family. Look for Seth Green as his son plus cameos from Bob Elliott and David Letterman.

Dark of the Sun (1968)

Director Jack Cardiff's Dark of the Sun (1968) is a wild, action packed movie starring Rod Taylor as a mercenary leader on a mission in the Congo. Known to many primarily as an excellent cinematographer, but the same year as this film Cardiff also directed Marianne Faithfull in The Girl on a Motorcycle.

 

Joysticks (1983)

Prolific exploitation director Greydon Clark (Black Shampoo 1976, Satan's Cheerleaders 1977, Without Warning 1980, Final Justice 1985, among others) took personal inspiration from the sight of young folks waiting to enter a video arcade and in 1983 he directed the video game themed comedy Joysticks.

Sin in the Suburbs (1964)

 

Joe Sarno was a pioneer and prolific purveyour of sexploitation and adult films. Sin in the Suburbs (1964) is an early standout in the genre of "adult" films. It presents a more intelligent and less a "nudie" film than initial appearance might indicate.

The story includes a teenage daughter who discovers her mother is having an affair and a salacious suburban sex club. While the film lavishes on period kitschy furnishings and decor, the sex club scenes bring Eyes Wide Shut to mind. Also notable is the effective editing.
