John Waters – 2 Letterman interviews 1986

Throughout most of the 1980s I was often sleep deprived due to staying up and watching the Late Night with David Letterman program. Thanks to the magic of Joe's videotapes and YouTube postings, I can once again revisit and enjoy clips from choice Letterman bits and guests such as Art Donovan, Crispin Glover, Sandra Bernhard, Tom Savini, Mr. T and many others. Another favorite and frequent Letterman guest during this period was John Waters. Here are two clips from 1986 appearances.

The Pogues – 1985 live footage

Here's Part Two in my St. Patrick's Day commemorative musical themed blogs with some live footage from 1985 from The Pogues. They have been creating their sonic mix; a blend that often includes traditional Irish music, punk and world music, since 1982. Presented below is some live footage from 1985 plus a few early videos.

Thin Lizzy – 1978 outside the Sydney Opera House

In commemoration of a rapidly approaching St. Patrick's Day, I'm posting a couple of blogs highlighting two of my favorite musical acts with ties to Ireland – Thin Lizzy and The Pogues.

Formed in Dublin, Ireland in late 1969, Thin Lizzy are a truly unique creature in the rock world. Fronted by Phil Lynott, the son of an Afro-Brazilian father and an Irish mother, the band/crew drew members from both sides of the Irish border. They found a certain level of success quickly and by the summer of 1970 had put out a single, "The Farmer"/"I Need You" on EMI. By the end of that year they had secured a deal with Decca Records to record their debut, self titled album released in early 1971. Shades of a Blue Orphanage, their second record came out in 1972 and was not well received. It did provide subtle hints of the more rocking direction the band's sound would soon be heading. In late 1972, against the bands wishes, their version of the traditional Irish ballad "Whiskey in the Jar" was released as a single. In spite of the band being upset that this did not showcase their current sound, this release proved to be popular and went to the top of the Irish charts as well as getting to No.6 in the UK during February 1973. As the seventies went on Thin Lizzy proved to be a stalwart of classic rock stations, with their records often providing songs that populate the airwaves to this day.

The sound of Thin Lizzy pulled influences from sources as varied as traditional Irish music and hard rock. An early proponent of two lead guitar harmony, this would go on to influence heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. Thin Lizzy toured with an incredible assortment of acts through the years. The list includes: Slade, Suzi Quatro, Bob Seger, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Status Quo, Aerosmith, Rush, REO Speedwagon and Rainbow - to name just a few.

The footage below comes from 1978, as Thin Lizzy performs in Australia outside the Sydney Opera House.

Napalm Death interview & live footage – 1988-89

This footage of Napalm Death comes from 1988-89. Combining elements of hardcore, extreme metal, punk and industrial; their sonic output runs the gamut from heavy, slow and super chunky to a whirlwind blur of grinding speed. Lyrics often take an angry stand on socio/political issues or look closer to the world of personal politics and human interaction. Their sound has retained the power and speed as the years have gone by and membership has changed here and there. The band continues to perform today and will be playing in Massachusetts shortly.

Pink Floyd - An Hour with... KQED PBS SF – 1970

Originally I posted this in several parts on my MySpace blog, but here is the performance in its entirety as one chunk of audio visual entertainment. This is some great trippy footage of Pink Floyd in 1970, from the pre-Dark Side of Moon era that I'm particularly fond of and enjoy.

Set list: Atom Heart Mother, Cymbaline, Grantchester Meadows, Green is the Colour, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.
