Troma's jewel in the crown of releases, for me, will always remain 1986s Toxic Avenger. This un-pc, violent revenge movie remains randomly stuck in my memory alongside 1973s Horror Hospital because I first viewed them back to back during a high school vhs-fest Friday in the 80s. Good times! The sequels, like much of Troma's output, do not hold much interest for me, but this one is a winner and hopefully will not be re-made as another shit stained, glossy Hollywood mess.

Alone in the Dark (1982)
Directed by Jack Sholder, 1982s Alone in the Dark opens with a head scrambling nightmare and takes off running with an intelligently crafted horror show that will always remind me of vhs tapes and Fangoria magazine.
After their previous psychiatrist leaves for a position at another mental hospital, a foursome of patients start thinking their replacement Dr. Dan Potter (played by Dwight Schultz, Howling Mad on tv's A-Team) has killed the original doc and will soon be trying to do the same to themselves. This foursome is made up of some notable actors: Martin Landau as "Preacher" - an unstable pyromaniac, the very large Erland van Lidth as "Fatty" - a child killer/molester, Jack Palance as Frank Hawkes - an insanely paranoid ex-POW, and Phillip Clark as the "Bleeder" - a shy homicidal maniac. An area wide blackout allows the four to escape the ward and make their way to Dr. Potter's home with violent intent. A wide eyed Donald Pleasence also rounds out the cast and chews the scenery, as the head of the hospital.

Bell From Hell (1973)
aka La Campana del infierno
Directed by Claudio Guerín
This kinky Euro thriller tells the story of a man who has just been released from an asylum. He then heads back home in order to exact revenge on the aunt and her daughters, who were responsible for him being committed.
An odd and tragic note concerning this film is that director
Claudio Guerín died in a fall from the title's bell tower on the final day of shooting.

Here's a little video time capsule from 1969 as the Grateful Dead make an appearance on Playboy After Dark and perform "Mountains of the Moon" and "St. Stephen" for Hugh Hefner and pals. The long standing rumor is that Hef had a security guard keep an eye on his drink so as not to be slipped any acid.

Joesph Cotten stars as ex-Confederate Colonel Jonas, a ruthless and still fanatical man. The plot revolves around a stolen shipment of U.S. Government banknotes stashed in a coffin that everyone from the United States Cavalry to a group of bandidos is actively pursuing.

Director Jack Cardiff's Dark of the Sun (1968) is a wild, action packed movie starring Rod Taylor as a mercenary leader on a mission in the Congo. Liquid Sky (1982)
Liquid Sky is an oddity of independent film created by Russian transplant Slava Tsukerman in 1982 after moving to New York City. Aliens have landed on a drug dealer's roof and are eagerly observing the situation when they discover that chemicals given off by humans during sex are an even more potent drug than heroin, so people start disappearing. Anne Carlisle performs dual roles as both Margaret and Jimmy adding to the overall odd tone of the movie.

The Killing of America (1982)
The Killing of America is a disturbing look at the gun
related violence in the U.S. throughout the years after the
assassination of John F. Kennedy up until the early 1980s. The footage
is unflinching, consisting of uncensored news footage of riots, serial
killers, and more related violent darkness. The films's narration was written by Leonard (brother of Paul) Schrader and his wife Chieko Schrader.
Former member of Paul Revere and the Raiders Mark Lindsay contributes a somewhat ominous and propulsive electronic score for the film which is similar to music he helped create for the U.S. version of Shogun Assassin.
An interesting side note, according to the IMDb.com trivia listing for the movie "the film has never been released, distributed, televised nor made available for sale in the USA."

The Deadly Spawn (1983)
Written and directed by Douglas McKeown, The Deadly Spawn aka Return of the Aliens: The Deadly Spawn (1983) has always been a favorite of mine since I first checked it out on vhs back in the mid 80s. Fangoria magazine had done several articles highlighting the film, so I immediately snagged it for an evenings rental when I located a copy in a local video store.
The special effects in this tale of alien invasion are quite well done considering the low budget of this filmed in New Jersey independent feature. According to IMDb.com trivia for the film, the enthusiasm and quality of the production garnered enough attention that Paramount almost selected it for theatrical distribution.

Joysticks (1983)
Prolific exploitation director Greydon Clark (Black Shampoo 1976, Satan's Cheerleaders 1977, Without Warning 1980, Final Justice 1985, among others) took personal inspiration from the sight of young folks waiting to enter a video arcade and in 1983 he directed the video game themed comedy Joysticks.

Man of the East (1972)
Man of the East (1972)
aka E poi lo chiamarono il magnifico
Written and directed by Enzo Barboni, Man of the East is a thoroughly entertaining comedic Euro-western. Much location filming was completed in Plitvice, Yugoslavia.
Terence Hill stars as an East Coast dandy lad who moves to his father's Wild West homestead at the request of his will. This fish out of water has three of his deceased Papa's rough and tumble pals to help navigate around spots such as the saloon and the wilderness. Although the story and characters have no connection, this film is sometimes described as a third in the Trinity series, but only shares a director/writer and a leading man.

Sin in the Suburbs (1964)
The story includes a teenage daughter who discovers her mother is having an affair and a salacious suburban sex club. While the film lavishes on period kitschy furnishings and decor, the sex club scenes bring Eyes Wide Shut to mind. Also notable is the effective editing.
