Cremaster 2 (1999)

Cremaster 2 (1999)
- Matthew Barney -

The story of Gary Gilmore inspires much of the film while the visuals/set pieces are often curiously perplexing as well as lavish, evocative at times of David Lynch or Alejandro Jodorowsky, and worthy of viewing on the big screen. Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo even makes an appearance. Currently this is my favorite of the cycle.

One of the best descriptions I've read about this film comes from Latheman-9 on their IMDb review. They sum up the review with - "Very artsy and a bit overwrought, Cremaster 2 is the kind of work one expects from Barney.Rating: 6/10."

Another State of Mind (1984)

Re-blogging this from three years ago, now updated with this one-part version...

Another State of Mind (1984)
is one of my favorite documentaries and I have Night Flight to thank for my first viewing. The film's directors Adam Small and Peter Stuart followed LA punk bands Youth Brigade and Social Distortion as they ventured out on a Summer of 1982 tour with stops in Canada and across the United States using a converted school bus as transportation. The film unfolds as the shows progress, some unavoidable problems occur, and cause increasing tensions to mount among the bands and crew.

The film is well constructed; including numerous interviews with fans along the way, as well as articulate punk rock stalwarts including Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks and Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat.

I did get to see Social Distortion once back in 1988 when they played the Exit in Chicago in support of their Prison Bound record, although this film this was lensed a little before I started really getting into the music and going to shows, Another State of Mind (1984) presents an engrossing "fly on the wall" view of an early, do-it-yourself punk rock tour.

Reality 86'd - Black Flag tour documentary

Reality 86'd, filmed by Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke, Desperate Teenage Lovedolls), documents a portion of Black Flag's 1986 "In My Head" tour. Along with his band Painted Willie, Greg Ginn's then side band Gone, plus the crew members; Markey's camera offers unique perspective into what would be Black Flag's final tour.

Shot in 1986 and completed by director David Markey in 1991 for We Got Power Films, approx. 62 min., Super 8 film.
